If you use Lightroom 4, 5, 6, or CC 2015, the .lrtemplate files will work just fine. If you’re all up to date with the latest version of Lightroom CC or Classic CC (and maybe you want to use the presets in ACR as well), the .xmp files are the ones you’ll want to use!
